Sutton Benger 18 Calne 5 13/09/08
Sutton Benger began their league campaign with an impressive win at home to Calne. This was a result of their superior fitness as the game wore on. To begin with Calne were dominant territorially and also in the set piece, but couldn’t put any score on the board in the first half. The principal incident of note in the first period was the rearranging of the features of Dave Major by a flailing Calne forearm. However after a little manipulation on the touchline courtesy of the chairman he was restored to his former less than beautiful self. The second half began in much the same way with Calne camped in the Benger half but on a rare foray into the calne half, Beneger won a penalty which was converted by Chris crome. Calne responded quickly with an unconverted try in the corner following one of the very few missed tackles on the day. Crome then regained the lead with a penalty from 35m out. With 15 minutes to go Benger upped the pace and ran the larger calne pack around the field. The back row scavenged superbly and a fter a cross kick was reclaimed by Benger , sharp interpassing allowed the omnipresent Simon Drage to go over in the corner. Calne then began falling off in the tackle and following a superb dummy and break by Tim Denning , an inside ball allowed Matt Stacey to power over the line for the final score. All in all a highly satisfactory start against a team who finished in the upper reaches of the league last season.
